According to the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS), many struggling householders are losing out because they fail to shop around.

"Shopping around for the best mortgage should be one of the first ports of call for people who find themselves in difficulty," said MABS spokesman Michael Culloty.

"The first quarter of the year is always the most difficult, and we are seeing an increase in people experiencing mortgage difficulties since Christmas."
